It's lovely to see a blog reappear on my reading list after a long period of absence, welcome back! :o)

I need to get myself back to Florence! I believe I was 5 when my family went? Obviously don't remember anything of the trip (which included Pisa and Rome) and the only time I've been back to the boot was a brief visit to Genoa for work... My parents went back to Florence 2 years ago and went on and on and on about how lovely it was.

Those toombs are gorgeous! I love the irony of Gallileo being buried there. ;o)

I look forward to reading more from your trip! And hoping to contrast your observations with mine if you land in a city I've visited.

Good questions, Ellen! Unfortunately I think the answers are lost in antiquity. According to Wikipedia, Dragon's Blood has been mentioned in reference books as far back as the first century AD. Wikipedia also reports that "there appears to have been a tendency to call anything that was bright red 'dragon's blood'", making it even harder to determine who might have been the first to use this name for the red resin from one of several species of plants. Another good question is - why not "ogre's blood" or "troll's blood"?

I'm sorry to hear that they are being attacked by a virus. They are definitely beautiful. And the wood has a unique look and lots of burls, so it makes nice ornamental objects.

hey there... one of my favorite trees!! there are quite a few of them on the acreage here, and in b.c. they are held in high esteem ... by those who love them.. hated by those who hate the peeling messiness of them... in Canada they are known as Arbutus...unfortunately there is a nasty virus which has been attacking them in the past few years ...i've often thought that the peeling bark should have made a great paper...i have some slices of a branch which i intended to make into Rune 'stones' .. one day one day ;)
